As a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner, I can assist you with issues and problems that are affecting your mental well-being. These concerns may include depression, anxiety, changes in eating or sleep patterns, substance abuse or difficulty getting along with others. During your initial evaluation, we will discuss both your mental and physical needs, as physical problems can impact mental health. You may be asked to see your primary care provider to rule out any physical problems before starting your mental health treatment. You are also free to discuss any spiritual issues that are of concern to you. You may request that family members come to your sessions.

Once your needs are identified, we will develop a treatment plan together to address your needs. The plan may include prescription or herbal medications, cognitive-behavioral therapy (which looks at thinking and behavior patterns), role-playing, couples or family therapy. Sometimes treatment can be brief, occurring over 6-8 sessions; if you decide to take medication, treatment can take up to a year. It is most important that you are a partner in your treatment plan and are comfortable with the direction you are taking.

Many persons have mental health issues. You are certainly not alone. We live in a complex world with increasing demands in our jobs, families and communities. Maintaining our mental health is as important as maintaining our physical health.
