Robert J. Goldsworthy, Ph.D.

In terms of background, I received my undergraduate degree from the University of New Mexico, majoring in psychology and minoring in mathematics and chemistry. I received my doctoral degree from Arizona State University in 1980. Since that time I have practiced in a variety of settings including the Affective Disorders Clinic at Maricopa Medical Center, The Brighton School For Emotionally Handicapped Children, and as both clinician and administrator of an outpatient practice. I have been in private practice since 1987. I am licensed by the state of Arizona and am a member of the American Psychological Association and the Arizona Psychological Association.

I work with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. My areas of specialty include:
- Depression - Parenting issues
- Anxiety problems - Self esteem issues
- Stress reduction - Interpersonal boundaries
- Relationship issues - Healthy functioning in a difficult world!

I take a very eclectic approach which includes the biological, family environment, family of origin, and situational stressors as major influences of how we think, feel, and act. I am very pragmatic, believing that effective coping and action are necessary components of successful growth and change. I believe that dignity, trust, and respect are the necessary cornerstones of any helping relationship. I am particularly attuned to self-esteem issues as healthy self-esteem allows us to approach our true potential as individuals and as family members. I utilize a variety of therapeutic methods including cognitive therapy, behavior change methods, education to help understand why we act as we do, and coping techniques to help cope more effectively with life's challenges and difficulties. I use both short term, problem focused treatment and longer term approaches focusing on resolving deeper self-esteem issues and family of origin problems.
